Projects

Here are a few projects Shoals Rodrigues has been working on over the years.

Improving Management Effectiveness for the Marine Protected Areas of Rodrigues

2010-2012

Donor: SGP-GEF by UNDP; RECOMAP; BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION

This project trained local stakeholders and end-users to enable them to prepare their own Management Plan for the four northern Marine Reserves. The management plan was prepared through a series of four planning workshops attended by 47 local stakeholders and two rounds of community consultations attended by 243 fishers and tour operators; a public consultation also received responses representing the views of 450 people in Rodrigues. The joint Marine Reserves Management Plan was handed to the RRA to help inform future policy decisions in regard to management of the marine environment. This was one of the first management plans in the region to have been written by local marine resource users.

Alternative livelihoods and support for Sustainable Marine Resource Management in Rodrigues

2013-2015

Donor: SGP-GEF by UNDP

Following the success of a previous RECOMAP/SGP-GEF project, Shoals Rodrigues designed a project to support the improved management of the marine resources of Rodrigues through providing support for the second octopus fishery closure and implementing the priority actions detailed in the Marine Reserves Management Plan. The objectives of the project were : (i) Develop and support alternative land-based livelihoods to provide income to those fishers affected by the octopus closure and Marine Reserves including (a) Community Forests and (b) Community Pasturages; (ii) Train local community representatives to enable them to actively participate in the co-management of marine resources; (iii) Demarcate the Marine Reserves; (iv) Implement community-based monitoring control and surveillance measures; (v) Expand and improve education and outreach within the local communities to support successful implementation of these initiatives.

Community Based Adaptation for
Fisheries-Dependent Communities of Rodrigues

 2013-2017

Donor: SGP/AusAID

The project aimed to help fisher-dependent communities on Rodrigues to realise and prepare for the potential consequences of climate change., and included the following results: (i) Completion of a Coastal Vulnerability Assessment; (ii) Development of a farming project to support the rearing of chickens and ducks at Baie du Nord; (iii) A total of 28 households were provided with rainwater harvesting tanks to address the issue of water shortages and reduce the dependency on piped water.

“Projet de gestion durable des zones côtières de L’ocean Indien” de la Commission de L’ocean Indien sur l’ile de Rodrigues

2017-2018

Donor: SHINOYEN, JAPAN

The main of the project is the rehabilitation of the coral reef by transplanting coral a community-based project. The 2018-2021 Coral Rehabilitation project focus mainly on assessing the success rate of the transplanted corals by monitoring growth rate and survival rate.

Implementation of Sustainable Alternative Livelihood Projects for Marine Protected Areas, by NGOs in the Republic of Mauritius under the Mainstreaming Biodiversity into the Management of Coastal Zone in the Republic of Mauritius

 2018-2021

Donor: UNDP-GEF, co-funded by BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION

Shoals Rodrigues was awarded a 12-month contract funded by UNDP-GEF Mainstreaming Biodiversity project to deliver training to beneficiaries in organic chicken and duck farming. The project is providing training to 25 beneficiaries that were identified from the communities affected by the northern Marine Reserves. The project is partnered with the Commission for Environment and others, Centre de Formation Agricole Frère Remy and Commission for Training and the National Empowerment Foundation. These organizations are assisting Shoals Rodrigues in the delivery of vocational and skills-based training. The British High Commission has co-founded the project by providing funds for the purchase of an incubator for hatchery and to buy additional feeds and piglets.

Assessing the management effectiveness of
Rodrigues’ Northern Marine Reserves

 JUN 2021- DEC 2021

Donor: BIOPAMA

This project undertaken a comprehensive PAME assessment for the four northern Marine Reserves in collaboration with key stakeholders in Rodrigues. The PAME process assessed whether management actions to date have achieved the desired results and identified the priority actions that are required to improve management effectiveness of the Marine Reserves in the future. The information gathered will then be used as part of an adaptive management process to revise the current Management Plan, to update goals and objectives, define new management actions and allocate appropriate resources. The consultative process has improved stakeholders’ understanding of the progress made to date, ensured that their interests are taken into account and addressed in future management and will thus help to rebuild community support for the Marine Reserves.

2021-2022

Donor: MRIC/RRGIS

Assessment of the biodiversity on the submarine platform to the south of the South East Marine Protected Area (SEMPA), Rodrigues’

The aim of the project is to increase knowledge about the biodiversity and habitat types on the submarine platform to the south of Rodrigues to inform policy and provide management recommendations in relation to the South East Marine Protected Area (SEMPA). More specifically, the project will map previously undescribed habitats on the submarine platform south of SEMPA and assess the biodiversity of associated communities.

Restoring Marine Ecosystem Services by Rehabilitating Coral Reefs to Meet a Changing Climate Future

2021-2026

Donor: UNDP/ADAPTATION FUND, MAINSTREAMING BIODIVERSITY

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)-supported Adaptation Fund (AF)-financed “Restoring Marine Ecosystem Services by Rehabilitating Coral Reefs to Meet a Changing Climate Future” project was approved in October 2018.

The overall objective of the project is “to reduce the impact of climate change on local communities and coral reef-dependent economic sectors in Mauritius and Seychelles by implementing coral reef restoration with thermal tolerant corals as an adaptation to climate change”.

The Project has three specific objectives, the first two of which are country-specific, and the third objective is regional. In Mauritius and Rodrigues the objective is “to improve food security and livelihoods and mitigate disaster risk through the active restoration of coral reefs degraded by coral bleaching as a result of climate change in Mauritius, in order to restore their essential ecosystem services

Therefore, as part of the project, Shoals Rodrigues has been selected to carry out coral restoration and associated work, awareness-raising activities, and training for alternative livelihoods.
